Category
Organophosphate Insecticides
Description
Solid; [Merck Index] Colorless when pure; [ICSC] Technical product is white to grayish; [CAMEO] White solid with an odor of mercaptans; Formulated as emulsifiable concentrate and wettable powder end-use-products; [Reference #2]
Sources/Uses
Used as systemic and contact insecticide; [Merck Index] A general use OP insecticide/acaricide used on various crops and ornamentals (mostly alfalfa, wheat, cotton, and corn); [Reference #2]
Comments
An erythema-multiforme-like contact dermatitis has been reported; [Kanerva, p. 1783] A cholinesterase inhibitor that can be absorbed through skin; May have adverse effects on human reproduction, based on animal studies; [ICSC] Has the highest reported incidence of poisonings (none life-threatening) of the organophosphates used in residential applications; No evidence of delayed neurotoxicity in hens; [Reference #2] Delayed neuropathy has been very rarely reported in humans, and seems to result from severe poisoning; Not likely to cause delayed neuropathy under normal levels of exposure; May cause an "intermediate syndrome" that can be life threatening; Symptoms developing 1-4 days following exposure include weakness of proximal limb muscles and neck flexors and respiratory distress; Four cases have been reported and involved ingestion of large amounts; [EFSA] “The average of two baseline respective cholinesterase activity determinations three days apart, with no exposures to enzyme inhibiting pesticides for at least 30 days, is recommended for each worker prior to exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors because of large inter-individual differences in published baseline values. To be established at least once a year. Removal from workplace exposures is recommended until the cholinesterase activity returns to within 20% of baseline.” [TLVs and BEIs] See "Omethoate."
Restricted
Residential uses cancelled in the US in 2000; [Reference #2]
