Sources/Uses
The thiophthalimides are widely used fungicides on seeds, field crops, and stored produce; [EPA Pesticides] Captan is also used as a biocide in paints, polishes, shampoos, and cosmetics. [Kanerva, p. 1765] No longer used as a fungicide in hair-care products; [Kanerva, p. 1516]
Comments
The thiophthalimides include captan, captafol and folpet; no systemic poisonings in humans have been reported; [EPA Pesticides] Captan is an agricultural fungicide that has caused occupational allergic contact dermatitis usually after airborne exposure. [Marks, p. 267] Allergic contact dermatitis also reported in hairdressers, painters, polishers, and varnishers; [Kanerva, p. 1765] In high-dose reproductive animal studies, captan causes testicular damage and fetal losses. It is a possible teratogen. [Frazier, p. 232-4] Not teratogenic in rats; Teratogenic in hamsters at a single dose of >750 mg/kg on day 7 or 8 of gestation; [ACGIH]
