  Comments
Introduced in 1964, Nitrofen was the first Protox-inhibiting herbicide. The first generation were diphenyl ethers. Newer Protox inhibitors usually consist of heterobicyclic molecules with one phenyl ring attached to a heterocyclic ring. Most are post-emergence herbicides. They are not known to be a threat to the environment. Concerning their effects on porphyrin metabolism, Protox-inhibiting herbicides are not considered to be a significant risk in healthy individuals. Variegate porphyria-like symptoms are observed in animals fed high doses, but porphyrin levels return to normal within a few days after ending the experiment. [Krieger, p. 1733-47]
